The Learning Program:
Recognizing the abilities of children with Down syndrome
The Learning Program supplements traditional education in literacy and math through direct instruction and home-use materials.
We have partnered with educators, researchers and administrators to develop a program that uses effective teaching strategies and customized materials to support parents and children in the educational process. Great teachers abound, but too often traditional education fails children with Down syndrome, due to factors like poor educational placement, lack of trained assistants and outdated stereotypes. Through The Learning Program, we hope to strengthen the educational potential for all children with Down syndrome, irrespective of their formal educational setting.
The Learning Program is currently in its fourth year, directly serving 80 families. During monthly program sessions, parents are provided with instruction by the program developer or guest lecturers. Children receive separate instruction from credentialed teachers. Many books and written materials used in the program can be downloaded from this website. Links to other recommended materials are provided where possible.
As we continue to develop and refine our program, instruction and materials, we welcome discussion from interested parents and professionals.
